Tournament Controller Permanent - National Tournaments - The PGA

The PGA’s vision is to improve the personal and professional lives of its Members. To assist with delivering its core objectives, the PGA is seeking to recruit a Tournament Controller to support the Tournament Director in efficiently and effectively planning

specific PGA National Tournaments and PGA Europro Tour events. Assist with the general day to day administration of the National Tournament Department, including the formulation of the National schedule. Act as a Rules Official at Higher Ranking Events. Develop and deliver Rules of Golf Education presentations. Co-ordinate the Tournament Staff Conference. Combining this function with Regional Offices where appropriate.


Principal duties include:-

  • To act as an ambassador of The PGA at all times, promoting key organisational messages and always presenting the Association, PGA Members, partners and golf in a positive light.

  • To carry out the following specific duties:

  • Responsibility for overall event administration both in the planning and activation stages

  • Responsible for compiling final fields for Pro Ams and Tournaments including publishing draws and competitor information and the distribution of such material to both event staff, venue staff, sponsors and competitors.

  • Assist in the production of outgoing correspondence for the department including letters, reports, minutes and emails whether concerning specific events or general communications. Assist in the department’s general day to day Member/Colleague/Customer/Sponsor correspondence

  • Some driving of tournament vehicles to and from venues across GB&I

  • Assist in the formulation of the National Tournament Schedule

  • Organising travel, accommodation, plus other tournament related third party business.

  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the tournament, as per the tournament staffing schedule and in accordance with PGA standards, company policy and tournament policies.

  • Responsible for various events including PGA Europro Tour events.

  • To conduct planning meetings and course inspections for each tournament.

  • Responsible for ensuring all tournaments are completed to budget and that standard operating procedures are followed for all tournament related activity.

  • Ensure PGA and Customer Service standards are met and Health & Safety and driving for work legislation and guidelines are adhered to (including the completion of golf facility risk assessments).

  • Responsible for ensuring the implementation of PGA Tournament Regulations.

  • Responsible for overseeing the day to day operation of Tournament Management (BlueGolf) software and ensuring the accuracy of all administrative and public facing information regarding specific PGA tournaments.

  • Responsible for ensuring any appropriate content from Tournaments is brought to the attention of PGA Media.

  • Upon invitation, to act as PGA Rules Official at any and all levels of the international game.

  • Responsible for the production and delivery of Rules of Golf education, including delivering presentations.

  • Responsible for co-ordination of the Tournament Staff Conference and related activity.

  • Develop training materials for the role and deliver training to others.

  • Responsible for achieving specific objectives of the department as defined by the Head of Tournaments.

  • Assist with other departmental duties as defined by the Head of Tournaments or their designated deputy.


As well as having a good knowledge of the game and structure of golf the ideal candidates will be competent, knowledgeable players, working towards or having passed PGA/R&A Rules exams. Areas of experience will include: database management, IT, administration, communication, customer care and supervision of staff. Holding a basic first aid qualification and being able to spend periods of time away from home is essential for the role.


The key competences to succeed in these roles include: the ability to work as an individual or as part of a team, to manage/supervise a small team, being flexible, organised with the ability to plan and prioritise work against strict deadlines, being customer and business focused whilst being a confident public speaker, being motivated to improve standards, giving attention to detail and understanding the profile, needs and demands of a membership organisation. As well as having a positive approach and attitude, the successful applicant will be able to demonstrate they are good communicators (verbally and in writing), they are able to remain calm under pressure and able to make, give and follow instructions.


Whilst this is a permanent, full time role with the core hours of the business being 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday a large degree of working outside of these hours is expected with some weekend and bank holiday working. We are providing all employees with the opportunity to take part in our hybrid working trial from day one of employment which offers more flexibility in working hours and dependent on role requirements, the opportunity to spend up to 60% of the week working remotely.
