General Manager, Workington Golf Club

Workington Golf Club is a private members club Established in 1893. The course was designed by James Braid and is nestled on the edge of the Lake District. Workington Golf Club is looking to modernise the club and we must have a team in place to provide a first class service. The position of General Manager is key to the success and development of the company.

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, dynamic and forward thinking general manager who will sustain Workington Golf Clubs Success and continually look at ways of future improvement. The general manager will work with the Executive Committee, Greens and Catering teams to continue to progress the upwards trajectory of improvement of all facilities for members and guests.


The General Manager is employed to carry out a diverse range of activities involved in the running of the Golf Club, managing staff, and ensuring Club targets are met. The successful candidate must be dynamic, modern thinking and ambitious. They do not necessarily need to have come from a golf management background.

  • Have or be willing to acquire an understanding of golf club management, particularly in the local area.

  • Have strong commercial, financial and IT skills.

  • Have experience in people management. Any added experience in F&B, Golf Course Management, Finance and Retail is a bonus.

  • Have a good knowledge of basic HR, employment, and legislation within a small business.

  • Have exceptional communication skills as this is a large part of the role as the focus of the Club.

  • Have the ambition and determination to succeed targets in relation to membership retention, golf course improvement and growth of reputation.

  • Have good reporting skills in presenting to various groups, producing detailed reports and monitoring trends within the business.


To maximise and maintain the sustainable annual EBITDA at the Club to make the business sound for the long term.

  • To proactively drive golf industry best practice / dynamic / inventive campaigns in all areas of the business to continually improve / grow customer relations, membership retention, and venue usage in line with the high-quality product that Workington Golf Club should be.

  • To oversee the day to day running of all departments at the Club (golf operations, greenkeeping, food & beverage and administration).

  • To delegate specific responsibilities to all staff under your supervision (particularly the Heads of Department), monitor their progress.

  • To ensure all golf club systems including competitions, handicaps, membership, and HR system are used to their full potential and kept up to date with the correct information.

  • To liaise with the board in establishing a strategic business plan for the Club over three, five and ten years and to regularly monitor and report on progress.

  • To conduct the day-to day operational management of the Club.

  • To act as the ‘face of the Club’ in respect of authorised purchases and contracts.

  • To stay well informed of new trends and developments within the golf & leisure industry.

  • To be on site at the Club at appropriate times to ensure the smooth and proper running of the business.
